About 20 years ago I was diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS. I had always led an active lifestyle and wasn’t about to let MS get in my way. I just had to modify things and learn to listen to my body. I try to rest when my body tells me to and try not to burn the candle at both ends. I tried to maintain moderate exercise and took up home practice yoga. Holding a more than full time executive job at the same time brought its challenges. I found myself napping in my car during my lunch hour and spending the weekends resting up so I make it through my work week. Four years ago I was lucky enough to retire from full time work. So what did I do. Take up downhill skiing, play golf and changed my diet, eating much more greens. Then I tried Sharon’s Feldenkrais classes. I went in blind not knowing too much about Feldenkrais. After almost 3 months I’m hooked. If you have MS you’ll know what I mean when I say you know the feeling when you wake up and every muscle in your body aches and when you move it feels like you ran a marathon yesterday, when perhaps you did nothing at all. One of Sharon’s classes is all I need to walk out feeling like I just had a full body massage. I haven’t given up on the moderate exercise and yoga, or gone back to my sloppy eating habits, Feldenkrais is just like a lot of good icing on top of a piece of cake.
If you know anyone with MS I encourage you to encourage them to try Feldenkrais. I cannot emphasize the benefits for me and how it has improved my quality of living.
I read your story in your profile about all the adversity that you have overcome to continue to pursue the dream of continuing to excel at the sport that you love and I was humbled.
